The Micro Factors Inhibiting Economic Growth

Voices:

In yet another of Russ Roberts' good policy videos, he and Ed Leamer discuss the micro-economic factors inhibiting a strong economic recovery. Leamer covers much of the same ground as our recent post -- "Does economic growth help the middle class?" -- but with some good charts and those nice cartoons.

Leamer, however, is in my view far too pessimistic about the impact of technology. He thinks robots and microprocessors are replacing workers in much of the economy. No doubt this is true. But they are also creating huge numbers of jobs. The "app economy," for example, is not yet five years old but has already created nearly 600,000 jobs in the U.S.
