The Economist details the geography of income stagnation. The states that have prospered over the past decade have either been blessed with an energy boom or have been located in the Plains (or both). Those states with poor income growth tended to have large concentrations of manufacturing industry. The worst performing region in the last decade was the Midwest, whose 16% decline in median incomes accounts for a sizeable portion of the entire country’s income stagnation.
